THE S.M.A.R.T. WAY OF LIFE IN 2012

Are you stuck in a rut concerning making and breaking New Year Resolutions?

I've got some ideas... it's called the SMART WAY OF LIFE.

It seems like a fitting way to begin this blog as I share with you my thoughts for the year as they come to me.

Is there anything that you thought by now you would’ve achieved or accomplished, but haven’t? I’m certain there are quite a few. Perhaps you can point to many reasons why you weren’t able to achieve them; but may I suggest that perhaps it wasn’t a goal in the first place?

We start the New Year with resolutions; grand ideas of what we desire the year to be; full of accomplishments and laudable achievements, but fast forward a few months, and those resolutions are unceremoniously thrown out of the window as we lose the steam we began the year with. Sound familiar? Many times, we know the goal we wish to achieve, but what we don’t realize is the part that we have to play in reaching that goal. Desire is NOT enough! No goal is achieved just by the desire to have the goal, there must be corresponding action.

So if you’d let me, I’d like to share some secrets that will enable you achieve your goals in 2012.

Are you ready to achieve some goals? Let’s go!

You must be able to separate wishes from goals. Wishes emanate from what I call the “nice to have” zone. Wishes are things that we would like to come to pass, nice to have, but we won’t be hurt or disappointed if they don’t happen. “Nice to have” goals don’t usually come to pass; but goals come from the “need to have” zone. Your goals must come with a sense of urgency and importance and will hurt you if they don’t happen. Let’s move on!

Would you consider these as goals? “I’d like to be rich”, “I’d like to be happy” or “I’d like to have a better marriage”? They aren’t goals, they’re just nice wishes. Your goals must be “S.M.A.R.T” which is an acronym for (Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Realistic & Time Bound). Allow me to explain.

Let’s come up with a SMART goal.

Your Goal: to lose 10 kg and be 75kg by December 31, 2012.

As you can see, this goal is Specific (we know exactly how much weight we wish to lose, what our desired weight is and when it must be achieved – any dream that doesn’t have a deadline is DEAD). Next, it must be Measurable (what do we weigh now, how often will we measure our progress), because it’s not only important to decide to START certain things, e.g. (lose weight or join a gym), you must also decide to STOP certain things as well e.g. (stop taking ice cream or coke every day, stop eating after 7pm etc). A lot of goals have died prematurely, simply because we didn’t recognize what our part in the fulfillment of the vision was and what we needed to stop doing as well.

Your goal must be Achievable (it must have the capacity to be actualized, but yet inspire you to keep on reaching). If your goal doesn’t inspire you to action, it’s just a mirage. I can tell how much you want something by what you’re willing to do to get it (need I add, legally) and what you’re willing to get it. The next step is that it must be Realistic (it’s got to be do-able) and finally, it has to be Time Bound (have a specific timeline, in this case, December 31, 2012). It must have a start and a stop to it.

There you have it, steps to achieving your goal. But have you ever wondered why some people not only achieve their goals like you do, but they seem to “super achieve”? Then read on!

Having evolved our SMART acronym, your goals must be: (Stretching, Meaningful, Attractive, Respectable & Tantalizing). I’m not merely playing with words, let me explain.

Great goals must Stretch you. Goals that are easy to achieve are not inspiring. A stretch goal must be one that causes you to feel that you have what it takes, causes you to feel that it’s possible, if you gave a little bit more, tried a little harder or did a little bit more. Next, your goal must be Meaningful (it shouldn’t be all about you; super achievers are concerned about the impact of their goals on others; it must have the power to inspire others to commit to the goal). Your goal must also be Attractive (your goal must give others the opportunity to use their strength, talents or skill to accomplish something great). Next, your goal must be Respectable (it must earn the respect of others by the significance of its impact) and finally, your goal must be Tantalizing (it’s got to make your mouth water, the thought of accomplishing it must be inspiring).

But wait a second; what we’ve dealt with so far is what your goal must be. It’s imperative to know what your goal will require!

Still running with our SMART acronym, your goals must require Strategy, Milestones, Action, Resources & a Team. Any goal without strategy is dead! Strategy deals with the “how to” of your goal. Next you’ve got to break it into Milestones (small, easy to achieve steps that help you feel like a winner e.g. join a gym, jog once a week). Next, take Action! No one gets a prize for what they intend to do, only for what they get done. Intention never gets rewarded, only action does. So get to work!

Next, you must identify the Resources necessary to achieve your great goals. Resources include time (what you don’t give time to will die), talents (your skill set and ability), thoughts (the ability to fo

cus on your goal. Focus is the ability to limit your distractions to one thing). Finally, you must have a Team or a support group of people who complete or complement you, but don’t compete with you. Don’t just get people you can work with, get people you can’t do without! In order to this, your team must be able to find themselves, their dreams, passions and fulfillment in your goal. Even God said in the beginning; “Let US make man….” He couldn’t do it alone. We all need someone.

So in 2010, I recommend that you set multi-faceted LIFESTYLE goals along the 7 dimensions of life e.g. (physical, emotional, relational, societal, professional, financial and spiritual) e.g. Physical goals could be to exercise 3 days a week, walk every Saturday; your emotional goals could be to read a book a month or listen to that inspirational DVD you bought at the store 3 weeks ago; but haven’t gotten round to listening to yet. Set professional goals for your career (people who set promotion goals always outperform those that have no career goals). Your relational goals could be to invest in more friendships, spend more time with your kids or call your parents more. Your societal goals could be to sponsor 3 children who should be in school, but can’t afford their fees. Set savings and investment goals for your finances while your spiritual goals could be to pray an hour a day (if not at a stretch, but 15minutess after you wake, 15 minutes driving to work, read a chapter of the Scriptures a day etc).

I hope these few secrets will prove invaluable to you in this New Year as you use them.

And as you square up against the opposition of gloom, after you have dribbled all the obstacles that came your way, picked up a yellow card for un-sportsman like conduct, penetrated the defence of previous impossibility, probably got brought down a few times on your way to the 6 yard box of accomplishment; as you take the penalty, square your shoulders, place your shot, take aim and FIRE and celebrate as you see the ball hurtle into the net, and you hear the stadium reverberate and listen to the capacity crowd sing with one voice; “IT’S A GOOOOOAAAAALLLLL”!!!!!

I can’t wait to celebrate your success as you have a fantastic 2010.

OVERCOMING THE INERTIA IN THE PURSUIT OF YOUR GOALS

How time really flies, it's already July 9th , six months have gone in the year.

Most people are still warming up to go, but, there is something called the power of inertia the end of the year brings.

Inertia is the tendency of a body to maintain its state of rest or uniform motion unless acted upon by an external force.

Big definition for a simple concept.

Long and short of what this means is, if you slow down in December at the end of the year, it becomes more difficult for everybody to get going in January and a simple way to check if this is real to you or not is to ask yourself these questions

1. What specific goals did you set in January?

2. What specific activities did you set to accomplish these goals?

3. How much of your goals were yet to be achieved

4. How many of your activity goals were yet to be done?

Just in case inertia has taken over, I came as a good external force to hopefully jolt you back into motion.

1. Identify one thing you need to start doing, stop doing, do more of, and do less of. To get you back in motion and get you to achieve your goal.

2. Set a specific goal to at least one thing you want to accomplish this month. Preferably an accomplishing goal and not just an acquiring goal.

3. Once you set your goals, set specific activities that will help you to accomplish your goal. They must be specific and actionable activity.

Most important thing is to make sure that your goals are divided into four weeks of accomplishment, so this includes what must you accomplish this week, the second week, the third week and the fourth week to ensure that by the last week you have accomplished your goals?

If you will like to share your goals with me, send me your goal for the month, week one, two, three and four.

Sharing with someone makes you feel accountable, and as you accomplish each one of them tell me, and if you do not get to, still let me know.

I'll be looking forward to hearing from you.

THE PROBLEM WITH NIGERIA

Problems and backwardness don’t just come. They are caused. The problem with Nigeria is one that is caused by many factors. For the purpose of this blog, I have narrowed it down to just two. You will agree with me at the end of this write up that these are the two hydra-headed issues that are responsible for the mountains of problems we are having in this country. The two major issues are discussed extensively below.

The first and most important of the two issues is corruption. You will agree with me that corruption is endemic and is also contagious. In other words, corruption breeds corruption and spreads like wild fire. Agents of corruption are every where especially at the top echelon of the society. To fight corruption, concerted efforts should be focused on the people at the helm of affairs. If only our leaders can eschew corruption, then fighting it at the grassroots level becomes easier.

A common adage has it that when an iced fish is getting bad, it starts from the head region. I sometimes laugh when I see Professor Dora Akunyili on television talking about re-branding Nigeria without talking about those in powers and at the corridors of power. They are the ones that need the real re-branding. If only she can muster the kind of courage she mustered to destroy fake and adulterated drugs while she was the Director-General of NAFDAC (National Agency for Food, Drugs Administration and Control) in her new portfolio as the minister of information and communication to re-brand first of all the executives, then the legislatures, the armed forces before talking about the rest of Nigerians, then she will be writing her names in GOLD as the best that this country has produced.

To buttress the fact that the people at the helm of affairs are the ones trying to frustrate every attempt to fight corruption to a standstill, I will like sight two major instances. The first one is when the duo of Generals Mohammadu Buhari and Tunde Idiagbon came up with War Against Indiscipline, it was Nigerians at the top echelon, whose illegal businesses were disturbed that sponsored the General Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida coupe that ousted them, thereby giving room to the mother of corruption orchestrated by the regime of the later. After many years of leaving power and it was becoming obvious that Idiagbon would soon talk, the wicked and corrupt elements in high places in our country killed him.

Just recently, another fellow in the person of Nuhu Ribadu, acting in the capacity of the Director-General of EFCC (Economic and Financial Crimes Commission), came smoking hot and cold and about to smash corruption with the deadliest blow. His only undoing was that his major captives were men in power. The so-called sacred cows. The rest is history as the men in power cleverly removed him from that office and appointed a yet-to-be re-branded Farida Waziri to do their bidding.

Without dwelling so much on corruption, I would like to introduce the second factor that is responsible for Nigerians many problems. To my mind, it is like the twin brother of the first. It is called TRIBALISM. This factor makes a not too good person to get a very lucrative appointment at the expense of very qualified people, just because he/she is from a particular tribe. This factor has succeeded in creeping into even the sacred places in this country. Places like churches, mosques and educational institutions, just to mention but a few. I think that after re-branding our political leaders, the next in line should be religious leaders. It is tribalism that caused the genocide of 1996 in Rwanda where the Tutsi killed over one million Rwandas believed to be of Hutu tribe. Nigeria might soon get to that ignoble state if this issue is not nipped in the bud. If TRIBALISM were to be a human being, I personally would have become a suicide bomber just to destroy it before it destroys my brothers and sisters. It was tribalism that made former president Saddam Hussein to use chemical weapon on the Shiite Muslims in Iraq.

Look at the two: CORRUPTION and TRIBALISM, if I am to proffer solution that will give birth to a fully re-branded Nigeria, I will mathematically express it thus:

xNIGERIA – (CORRUPTION + TRIBALISM) = yNIGERIA
where x = Present and
y = Re-branded Nigeria

ENTREPRENUERSHIP

I only became conscious of the word ENTREPRENEURSHIP in 2004, when I got my first job with a non-governmental organization after four years of hunting. The name of the NGO is FATE Foundation. The establishment caters for the entrepreneurial skill acquisition need of young graduates and non-graduates alike.

At FATE Foundation, participants are thought how to do business in the most modern way, applying the global business principles learnt as a student of the establishment.

I also volunteered with another NGO called JUNIOR ACHIEVEMENT NIGERIA. This is an NGO that teaches young people in secondary schools to have commercial skills and to learn how to produce and market simple products like candles, soap, cake, chim-chim, gums, envelopes, baskets, brooms etc. These skills are things they are taught to learn alongside their usual academic work.

Some of the things I learnt from these two NGOs that I have worked with can be itemized below as follows:
A Child should be taught how to start a business at an early age in their life.
A child should be guided to learn how to save money at an early age
A child should be taught how to effectively combine two or more things, i.e. commerce or craft and normal studies in school.
The mind of a child should be kept productive and busy. This also implies that that the child can be kept away from bad company and lazy people.
A child, either male or female should be treated as an asset, not a liability to the parents.
I also learnt that there are lots of businesses to do, to the extent that it is impossible for anyone to say that he or she is jobless in any given day.
I learnt that pride is a big enemy of entrepreneurship. This is so because an entrepreneur must learn how to be disciplined and pride breeds indiscipline.
I was meant to learn that it is wise for us to have a list of commodities people will always need from time to time and learn how we can produce and market them.
I learnt that you are capable of doing anything only if you think you can.
I was taught that a creative mind is a terrible thing to waste.
I also learnt that whatsoever thing is conceivable is achievable.

Let every Nigerian today, old or young, learn how to produce something and become an ENTREPRENEUR

BORN AGAIN

The word Born Again is a language common among Christians and non-Christians nowadays because it is seen as a prerequisite, in Christendom, to be considered as an ardent follower of Christ, who is the founder of the Christian faith. As a matter of fact, Our Lord Jesus Christ was the first to use the word BORN AGAIN while addressing one of the teachers of the Jewish laws by name Nicodemus.

According to the Biblical account taken from John 3:1-21, Nicodemus came to Jesus by night, which implies that he met Him secretly to confide in him that he believes that He is truly sent by God by virtue of the miracles Jesus performed, even though the Jewish leaders condemns His teachings owing to the fact that they consider them contrariwise to the laws given by Moses.

Jesus in His reply said that except a man is born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God. Nicodemus apparently thought that Jesus was talking about being born a second time by a woman. Jesus replied that a man must be born of water and of the spirit in order to see the kingdom of God. The kingdom literarily means the glory of God (i.e. power, wealth, influence, wisdom etc). In short our Lord Jesus said that you shall also receive power after the Holy Ghost is come upon you.

Once a man accepts Christ as his Lord and saviour by confession, the next thing is for the man to be baptized in water by complete immersion and then to receive the baptism of the Holy Ghost. It is when these two conditions are fulfilled that a man can be called a Born Again.

The importance of being Born Again as a Christian cannot be over emphasized as the following will begging to happen to such a person, distinguishing him from an ordinary nominal Christian or a fake:
The gift of speaking in tongues – This experience edifies (Uplifts the man’s spirit, emboldens the man) as can be seen in Apostle Peter after the Pentecost experience. Hitherto, he was afraid of the Jewish leaders and even denied Christ thrice, but when he received the Holy Ghost, he was emboldened to preach the gospel.
The Gift of Power – This is one of the things that Jesus said that you shall receive after the Holy Ghost has come upon you. This power can heal a sick person, raise the dead, decree a thing and it shall be established, strengthen you physically like Samson, to accomplish difficult tasks etc.
The gift of Financial Empowerment – The Holy Ghost gives you wisdom and directs your steps on what to do and where to go to. He even speaks to people before you get there to favour you. He represents you in places you are striving to gain entrance. He makes you disappear, just like in the case of Stephen. He carries you from one place to the other, just like He carried Elijah and Jesus to the top of the mountain.

The thing a Christian accomplishes when he is Born Again is inexhaustible. Hence, a Christian must be Born Again.

I intentionally listed a few of the benefits of being Born Again because it is becoming worrisome to see professed preachers begging for money in commercial buses, in market places, among politicians in the guise that they are preaching as if they don’t know that God has even promised to give the wealth of the heathen to the Born again Christian. This is what King Solomon wrote many years ago that he has seen a great evil under the sun: kings trekking while beggars are on horse backs.

Christians, note and beware
